Marilyn Nathan was a teacher for 29 years, nine as the deputy headteacher of a leading secondary school. She has taught in a variety of schools including multi-ethnic comprehensives and single sex selectives. Following this, Marilyn Nathan became the Assistant Director of a national children’s charity. An OFSTED inspector for both the primary and secondary phases, her work as an education consultant specialising in leadership development takes her into a range of schools in Britain and abroad. She is very experienced in interviewing candidates for posts of responsibility and has helped organise courses on interviewing skills for her LEA.
She has authored a number of books including the Survival Guide series for senior and middle management in schools. Other titles include The Headteacher’s Survival Guide and The New Teacher’s Survival Guide as well as Pastoral Leadership published by Routledge/Falmer in 2001 and the Headteacher’s Edufax in 2003, the 3rd edition has now been printed and the Leadership Team/Middle leader’s Edu-fax in 2006. She is also the author of the recently revised TA’s Edu-fax(2008).
In recent years she has been the External Adviser for headteacher review in 72 schools. Marilyn now publishes her own e-books, which are available on her website. First titles include;“Going for promotion to senior posts” and “Managing the partnership with govenors”

The Course:
Suitable for both primary and secondary teachers, this seminar explores what it means to be a member of the SLT in the current educational climate. It will take a case study approach based on real situations and on current research on effective leadership in practice.
Topics covered on the day will include:
- Key features of an AHT role.
- What is different about being in the SLT? Opportunities, issues and tensions.
- What can you do to get off to a good start? What are the essentials for succeeding in the SLT?.
- Models of SLTs-now and in the future.
- Leading a whole school initiative-your role as a change agent.
- Bringing staff on board
