Marilyn Nathan was a teacher for 29 years, nine as the deputy headteacher of a leading secondary school. She has taught in a variety of schools including multi-ethnic comprehensives and single sex selectives. Marilyn Nathan is also a very experienced educational manager, with experience of leading a range of teams. She has managed all kinds of meetings both in schools and in the voluntary sector as the assistant director of a national primary children’s charity. An OFSTED inspector for both the primary and secondary phases, her work as an educational consultant specialising in management, as the External Adviser for headteacher appraisal for more than 40 schools, and as consultant for performance management, takes her into a range of schools throughout the country, She delivers training seminars, on a range of management issues, both in Britain and abroad.
Marilyn is also the author of a number of popular books on education management, including A Handbook for Headteachers (Kogan Page, 2000) and Pastoral Leadership, a guide to improving your management skills (Routledge Falmer 2001). She is currently working on Subject Leadership, a guide to improving your management skills and Managing People and Performance in the Primary School.

The role of the co-ordinator in the primary school is a rapidly evolving and complex one which requires extending professional and personal development into new areas, particularly those of leadership and management. You are expected to take more responsibility and be an effective manager of your team and of the subject or of the phase. This course focuses on the skills you need as a primary co-ordinator and the roles and responsibilities that you have to undertake, including your ever-expanding monitoring role. A case study approach based on real situations and current research on effective leadership in practice is used.
