We know that it’s best not to chase and adopt every new initiative. We also know that with some schools photocopying over two million copies a year, whilst student home internet access exceeds 90 percent, is at times a nonsensical and unsustainable activity. It’s time to consider how we can use each educational tool for its correct purpose – how the school intranet, radio station, animation studio and the CD-Writer can all come alongside the photocopier as an integrated set of powerful learning tools.

John Davitt has been an English teacher, Head of Year, an Adviser for Teaching and Learning Styles and Regional Co-ordinator with the Flexible Learning Project. He has a particular interest in the role of education technologies and how they can enhance learning opportunities for pupils of all ages and abilities. John Davitt has been a freelance writer and trainer since 1992 and writes for the TES, The Times, and The Observer on education and the educational implications of technical developments. He is the developer of the CD-Rom title WordRoot, an interactive guide to knowledge about language. John’s book entitiled New Tools for Learning (Pub. June 2005 by Network Educational Press) has already been extremely well received.
