Teaching Foreign Languages in the Primary School

Learning foreign languages from an early age offers numerous benefits to children and the Coalition Government have recently declared their support for language learning. This important and topical one-day course will explore the main issues surrounding teaching languages in the primary school and offer practical strategies to bring languages alive in your classroom whether you are a specialist or non-specialist teacher.
Course leader: Dr Amanda Barton Amanda Barton works in teacher education at the University of Manchester. She began her career teaching German, French and English in secondary schools and, more recently, has taught in primary school. Her book Getting the Buggers into Languages outlines strategies for motivating pupils and the second edition (2006, reprinted 2008) includes material for primary teachers. She supervises Masters and PhD students working in the field of primary languages and is currently researching the effectiveness of multilingual programmes in primary school. She is Chair of Governors of her children’s infant school.
